Connectors for CompactPCI® Applications

CompactPCI is an open bus architecture based on the Peripheral Component Interconnect specification (PCI) for desktop computing. The growing demands of commercial and industrial computing require more robust form factors, which have lead to the development of CompactPCI. The CompactPCI specification was developed in 1994 by an industry standards group, PICMG (PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group), and uses industry standard components with high-performance connectors to maximize system performance for rugged applications.

Today, PICMG consists of 650 member companies that continue to work together to improve and expand upon the performance of CompactPCI. Winchester Electronics is an Executive Member of PICMG and is actively involved in the continuing development of high performance products to support CompactPCI applications.

MetCon-2® Hard Metric Connectors
Hard Metric 2mm rectangular connectors fulfill the majority of CompactPCI connector requirements. The PICMG 2.0 Core Specification provides the foundation for the application of 2mm Hard Metric connectors to achieve the desired performance levels of PCI and the ruggedness of rack-mounted systems.

Winchester's MetCon-2 line of 2mm Hard Metric connectors is the perfect solution to the challenges faced by designers and assemblers of CompactPCI systems. The features of MetCon-2 that contribute to reliable and accurate application and assembly are as follows:

  • Press-fit terminations for low cost, quick, versatile, and reliable board installation.
  • Compliant “eye-of-the-needle” conforms accurately to PC board plated through-holes.
  • Socket designed with alignment wedge for proper positioning and scalloped recess to prevent pins from bottoming out in the socket.
  • Designed to minimize pin stubbing typically encountered in rear plug-up applications:
    • Tapered pin tip helps to properly locate pin during mating.
    • Contains a unique stabilizing feature designed to help long-tail contacts maintain pin-tail straightness.
    • Mylar® strip applied to rear pin tips to help hold position during initial assembly.
    • Compliant section design holds pin position after assembly on PC board and shrouding.
    • Generous lead-in on shrouds and mating socket connectors.
